Not a news day goes by in the US without the mention of cost cutting in the medical sector. I used to live across the road from one of the busiest hospitals in New York City and after a year of no sleep due to the endless noise of ambulance sirens I decided to leave the West Village in Manhattan and head to a more quiet area of the city. Today my old neighbourhood has an eerie silence as St Vincent Hospital fell victim to the current climate of economic cut backs and was closed down, you may remember it from the days after the twin towers fell on 9/11, people stood outside the hospital praying that their loved ones were inside and now a permanent memorial of tiles decorated by the victims’ families and supporters stands on the corner of Greenwich and 7th Avenue.
This inspired me to work with thebigword Interpreting team to create an interpretation service that was not only equal to the interpretation services that the medical industry rely on to communicate with its customers and patients but to create one that is cost effective and significantly cheaper than what was been used. At that time Hospitals were paying over $2.50 per minute of over the phone interpreting and far more for onsite interpreters. Today thebigword supplies many hospitals throughout the US with highly qualified, trained and experienced interpreters at less than $1.00 per minute cutting the cost of communication and making it more affordable by many millions of dollars.
thebigword is now working with new hospitals every month supporting them with services 365 days a year providing specialist interpreters in over 300 language combinations and supporting the hospitals JCAHO compliance. I call on all suppliers of hospitals around the US to be socially responsible with their pricing and support our health system and economic recovery, now is not the time for greed.
